The power of Tuakana Teina

8 Feb 2023

Malachi joined Ira in 2020 when he started his Visual Effects and Animation degree with the Auckland University of Technology. Under the mentorship of senior creatives, he’s now contributed to many of our award winning projects.

Nāku te rourou, nāu te rourou

Malachi has worked alongside Storm Smith, who has mentored Malachi in the creative process, design, storytelling and motion graphics and how to develop his personal talents and passions to deliver excellent work. However, like the whakataukī “by my basket and your basket the people will thrive”, Malachi was bringing just as much as he was learning.

Like many rangatahi, Malachi brings a fresh, digital first, global perspective which has been a highly valued lens to bring to our work. He is inspired by Directors such as: Satoshi Kon, Sergio Leone and Wong Kar Wai. Musicians such as: Chet Baker, João GIlberto and Masayoshi Takanaka. Artists such as: Vivian Maier, Francisco Goya and Pia Riverola

This rangatahi power and perspective has been nurtured and encouraged by senior creatives who have collaborated with and supported Malachi on some of our best award winning projects. Including;

  • The Art of Matariki (Best Award - Gold)
  • Ateed Tū Mai Rebrand (Best Award - Gold x2)
  • He Korowai Oranga (Best Award Silver)
  • Manatu Taonga (Best Award Bronze)

We love having Malachi in our Ira whānau and cannot wait to see the heights he will reach as he progresses in his creative education.

Some other things we love about Malachi:

  • Malachi recently completed his degree in Visual Effects and 3D animation where he was awarded Outstanding achievement in Visual Effects
  • He loved film photography and videography. Check out his work here! instagram.com/mckay_malachi
  • He loves his record player and always brings the best tunes to the office
  • He’s our office chef and is always in the kitchen turning out flash meals for kai tahi (shared lunches)
