The Best of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori

23 Sep 2020

Every year Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori gets bigger and bigger. This year was no exception.

Te Taura Whiri I Te Reo Māori inspired us to create a 1 Million Māori Moment. 1 Million + people stopped on the 14th of September 2020 to whakanui celebrate our native language. We sung, played, ate, learned and laughed. Ka mau te wehi Aotearoa!

Other than having a laugh at our Creative Director, Johnson on Te Ao News and Whāriki Live Panel Discussion, here are 6 great ways to stay inspired and excited about learning te reo Māori.

1. Whakarongo | Listen

Listening to Taringa podcast is one of THE best ways to learn more about Māori culture. It is presented by language experts, but in the most down to earth way. Learn about key words that you can add to your daily use. Be inspired by ancient stories that shape the Māori world. Laugh at the crack up jokes.

2. Pānui | Read

Hēmi Kelly has a book A Māori Word A Day. A great way to continue the journey of language learning. It’s fun and simple and easy to follow.

3. Tākaro | Play

Ever wondered what your name is in Māori? A bit of fun from Spark as they continue to add more ways to celebrate and personalise te reo Māori and technology.

4. Waiata | Sing

We all know the tune! Now learn the words. Easy as saying Mahuru, mahuru…

5. Ako | Learn

A great website where you can create your own pepeha or connections to the places of Aotearoa. Export it as a JPEG, or purchase an artwork to frame and hang in your home. Pepeha is how we introduce ourselves in New Zealand.

6. Kōrero | Speak

Finally, give it a go, say something. Use the Kōrerorero app to help you create sentences you can use on the daily.

Go for it everyone. Kia kaha te reo Māori.
