Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Annual Report

5 Aug 2022

Covid created many challenges for communities across Aotearoa. Added to this, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei had experienced tragedy with the passing of their Chief Executive. The brief to us was to create their Annual Report, authentically conveying the pain within the community, while also expressing the hope and resilience that endures.

We created a colour story through the bold use of black as an expression of the pain and challenges felt by the community.

Photography was commissioned to represent a rising energy of hope and healing, similar to that of the breaking of a new dawn.

We worked with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei artist Graham Tipene to create evocative cover art. The inspiration for the graphics came from the whenua and moana that has been the source of mana and rangatiratanga for Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei for generations. The environment has a mauri or life energy that enables our world to be full of life.

Graham expressed the mauri of the Waitematā which flows around Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei’s lands as fluid movement. Each of Whai Rawa’s properties are represented by a circular symbol anchored on the land. Beacons of opportunity and resilience.

We were honoured to collaborate with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei artists, photographers and whānau to bring their story to life. A respectful acknowledgement of the pain experienced through tragedy. A hopeful expression of how community can heal and build for the future.
